One of the main technqiues that we use in Sheffield to investgate magnetic semiconductors is magneto-optical spectroscopy. The diagram below shows a schematic diagram of our apparatus.
The arrangement allows us to measure the magnetic circular dichroism and Faraday rotation in both Kerr (reflection) and Faraday (transmission) geometries. The sample is mounted in a helium flow cryostat between the poles of an electromagnet. A photo-elastic modulator (PEM) is used to obtain high sensitivity according to the method of K. Sato, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys., 20, 2403 (1981).
