I run the ultrafast laser labs in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield. These labs were established with funding from the EPSRC, HEFCE, the University of Sheffield, and the Strategic Research Infrastructure Fund (SRIF).

I mainly work on III-V semiconductors and photonic structures, with a particular interest in ultrafast nonlinear optics and quantum information processing. Further details of this work and a list of relevant publications may be found at the Semiconductor Physics Group web page.

I also work on quantum optics, magnetic semiconductors, and molecular materials.

Quantum optics

I have worked on the generation of squeezed and sub-Poissonian light by several different techniques. At present, my interests in quantum optics are being pursued through my work on III-V semiconductors, especially on the use of quantum dots for single photon sources and quantum information processing. (See the Semiconductor Physics Group web page.) A selected list of my papers on quantum optics is given here.

Magnetic semiconductors

Zinc oxide and indium oxide are wide band gap semiconductors which become ferromagnetic when doped with suitable transition metal ion elements such as cobalt, manganese, or iron. I mainly work on thin film samples grown in Sheffield by pulsed laser deposition and use magneto-optical spectroscopy to investigate their properties. For further information see:

Molecular materials

Light-emitting polymers and molecular materials offer exciting prospects for the development of low cost electroluminescent displays and large area solar cells. In Sheffield, we are investigating exciton migration and Förster energy transfer mechanisms, and also the use of photonic structures to control the spontaneous emission. Further details of this work may be found at the Electronic and Photonic Molecular Materials Group web page. Some important publications on time-resolved spectroscopy of molecular materials are listed below.
